Sunglasses

Did you know that the Inuits (that is what the Eskimo peoples call themselves) invented special sunglasses some millennia ago? Binocular glasses, albeit without lenses and with a narrow horizontal slit, were carved out of walrus tusk. This way the Inuit people protected their eyes from over-exposure to sunlight off the snow’s surface.

Sunglasses can serve as protection against sunlight or as a valuable fashion accessory. In terms of the lenses of sunglasses, impermeability of UVL is especially important (electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than visible light). If sunglasses’ lenses are 99-100% UVA and UVB impermeable, they are UV 400-certified (this means that your eyes are protected against radiation up to 400nm). The EU standard requires a minimum 95% impermeability (protection up to 380nm) to UVA and UVB radiation. In addition to UVA and UVB protection polarized lenses, which mitigate reflection of sunlight off shiny objects, are important for professional drivers, pilots, captains, and anyone else working in harsh conditions.
